In 2002, EXFO introduced protocol-layer testing to the product portfolio in response to the multiple management challenges faced by Network Service Providers. These challenges included convergent telecom/datacom networks, the deployment of new services such as Gigabit Ethernet and Fibre Channel and the need to assure quality of service (QoS) without increased operational expense.
The strategic acquisition of Avantas Networks Corporation (renamed EXFO Protocol Inc.) enabled combined protocol, optical and physical-layer testing in a single platform, the FTB-400 Universal Test System for cost-effective testing of access, metro, DWDM and long-haul networks.
