Applications/Services |
|
IP-digital set top box development is driven by service provider requirements
that can increase Average Revenue Per Unit (ARPU)
while meeting consumer demand for new digital media content and features.
In its basic configuration, the IP-digital set top box simply needs to decode
and render broadcast TV signals. For advanced configurations, an IP-digital set top box
can include a variety of multimedia-on-demand capabilities and services, digital
rights management (DRM), home networking, Web browsing and real-time voice over
(VoIP).
EdgeStream* |
|
EdgeStream* provides a software platform that enables broadcast VoD over public
broadband. The software utilizes standard players, formats and protocols to transport high
bit-rate video over the public Internet, from source to client, regardless of network
impairments and congestion, to enable users to experience uninterrupted
broadcast quality video streams.

Multimedia Building Blocks |
|
Multimedia building blocks perform specific functions, such as audio/video stream decoding,
and provide a framework for high-level applications and middleware, such as a Java* Virtual
Machine or embedded browser.
CODECs include audio/video encoders, audio/video decoders, file format readers, audio/video
demultiplexers and other filters and translators. As the IP-digital set-top box receives the IP stream,
the CODEC decodes the stream for display on the TV, supporting such CODEC technologies as
Windows* Media* Video, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 standards. CODEC providers can deploy the software
as part of a media framework provided on a particular operating system, or as part of a
software development kit (SDK) that can enable easy integration.
Media Excel* |
|
Media Excel* provides Java-based media compression and streaming solutions to address standards-based
(MPEG2/4, H.263/4) real-time encoding, decoding, streaming client-server and transcoding applications
for IP-DSTBs based on Intel® architecture and desktop multimedia designs.
|
|
Java* Virtual Machines and embedded browsers - To ease the porting and interoperability of their software
to various consumer electronics devices, some vendors are architecting their applications in either Java or
as an application that can run within a ported embedded browser. To support this software structure,
third-party software companies have optimized and deployed Java Virtual Machines (JVMs) and embedded browser
technology, either discretely or as part of an OS, to Intel® architecture-based CE platforms.
